Lundy's Fine Food
The background

Lundy's Fine Foods in County Mayo is one of Ireland's leading independent purveyors of premium quality meats and delicatessen products. This family-run company is well known for capturing the distinctive flavour of the region in traditional cooked meats like speciality cured hams, old-style sausages and savoury puddings.

The company already had a successful business supplying the food service sector and small independent retail outlets with everything you expect to find on a good deli counter.

The driving force behind the business, founder Jack Lundy, now wanted to expand his food service product listing into a high quality retail offering.

Lundy's product portfolio had kept pace with consumer demands for choice and quality, so with a corporate identity recently revamped, they were in a strong position to take their unique brand of tradition and innovation to the multiples.

The challenge

Such a radical new direction for the business called for a substantial investment to translate the new brand identity into shelf ready packaging.

Lundy's didn't have any suitable equipment in place to deliver the kind of high quality retail format they envisaged, so they asked preferred packaging solutions supplier, RPS, to step up to the challenge.

RPS not only had to design stylish graphics for the various packaging options, but also needed to set up new process lines with all the appropriate containers to hold the products. It was, in essence, a real turn-key packaging solutions project.

The solution

RPS scoped out exactly what was required for Lundy's to deliver their new retail format, and closely managed the project with input from two well-established partners. RPS briefed Pink Stripes Marketing to develop the graphic concepts and photographic approach for the packaging; while Ireland's number one conveying company, SF Engineering, helped to specify and build the processing line - all under the management of RPS.

Lundy's wanted to stand out from the competition with a premium look that reflected the quality product within. So RPS teamed up with thermoforming partner PFF to develop bespoke black trays for the cooked ham products that incorporated an embossed Lundy's logo.

RPS liaised closely with SF Engineering to ensure each tray sealing component matched the trays exactly.

With the process line set-up, and tray sealing equipment plus matching trays commissioned, all that remained was to finalise the look and feel of the packaging materials.

Lundy's wanted to launch a trio of ranges: a 'classic ham range', a 'breakfast range' and a 'sandwich range'; all of which had to be different in layout but clearly from the same family.

RPS briefed an experienced food photographer and stylist to create tempting images using the latest digital photography and directed the shoot to achieve results consistent with Lundy's premium products.

Fusing all the designs and photography together, the packaging design was complete and ready for RPS to print manage production of labels and sleeves.

The benefits

Taking the leg-work out of sourcing all the elements and ensuring the optimum solution first time round, Jack Lundy was able to stay focused on the daily pressures of running his core business. What's more, the sales force is now able to take a sophisticated, contemporary brand to prospective multiple retailers, and offer his quality food service range to discerning shoppers.

The winning package

With expert project management and an understanding of the client's business, RPS and their highly skilled partners created a complete packaging solution, delivering over 40 packaging components, a factory unit and the process lines.
